Over Christmas I took a trip to South East Asia; Vietnam, Cambodia and then ending the trip in Bangkok at the start of January. I hadn’t been to Bangkok since I was travelling almost 10 years ago when I was staying in a backpackers hostel on the Khao San Road – needless to say the Shangri La is a huge improvement!
I am a huge fan of Thailand and even though we only had 2 nights and one full day I was excited to go back. In 2017 I got engaged at the Shangri La hotel in The Shard and I had no doubt this hotel would be just as impressive.
The pictures don’t show it but when we first arrived at the hotel it was very hot, we had just finished a busy day of being tourists and all we wanted to do was chill by the pool with a cold drink. As we walked in I laughed at how much we stood out with our backpacks and casual clothing.
The front of house told us we had come to the wrong reception and we were both disappointed that we wouldn’t be in this building. Little did we know we had actually booked a superior room and had a section with a second swimming pool that only upgraded rooms could access. The hotel had a black and gold tuk tuk that took us and our bags to where we needed to be.
The first impressions of the hotel were amazing, what a beautiful hotel with a high standard of decorations, it’s easily apparent that you’re in a luxury hotel.
We didn’t spend much time in the hotel as we wanted to explore Bangkok but all of the staff that did help us were extremely friendly and helpful.
The room was fabulous, it was very comfortable and spacious with everything we could have needed for such a short stay. When we arrived there was lots of tropical fruit waiting for us which was nice after such a busy day. There was lots of additional furniture in the room, it’s really nice to have more options of where to lounge and with the beautiful decor it does feel very homely.
The bathroom was very elegant with lots of marble and giving you the option of having a bath or shower, which is always a winner in my eyes. Another great feature which is a dream of mine to have is the double sink in the bathroom.
The Swimming Pools
With our room we had access to two swimming pools but we actually ended up going to the main swimming pool that everyone could access. We didn’t get to the pool until it the sun was starting to go down but it was still lovely to have one final time relaxing as we were flying back to London very early the next morning. By spending time around the swimming pool it really made it feel more like a holiday rather than a city break.
The Amazing Views
I think my favourite thing about the Shangri La, Bangkok was the location on the Chao Phraya river and the amazing views from the high up hotel rooms. I’m not afraid to admit I took quite a few images of the sunset and loved every minute of it. Our room had a balcony that we sat on to watch the sunset before taking the hotel’s riverboat to Asiatique (a selection of boutique shops and restaurants further up the river).
We didn’t get a chance to try any of the hotel’s food or drinks but there were plenty of options, as well as hotel entertainment. Overall what a superb hotel, with incredible staff & luxury decor. I was very impressed with the stay and it was the perfect way to end our South East Asia trip. I wish we’d had longer to explore this fantastic hotel & area on the Bangkok riverside but I have a feeling we’ll be back again one day!
